Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco chimney caps across Atlanta, with most replacements running $340-$680 installed depending on flue size, cap style, and whether the existing mount needs repair. Most jobs booked before noon are completed same day. Homeowners usually notice the problem after a storm, when water starts hitting the firebox floor, or when they spot rust streaks running down the brick from a cap that’s been slowly failing since the last Georgia humidity cycle.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps break down into three main series you’re likely to find on Atlanta homes: the standard galvanized line (GC-series), the stainless multi-flue caps (SS-series), and the copper decorative line (CU-series). The GC-series is what we pull off most often in neighborhoods like Decatur and Virginia-Highland, where builders spec’d them in the late 1990s and 2000s. The label is stamped on the underside of the mesh screen, not the lid, so you’ll need to look up from below or have us check it with the camera.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: Gelco changed its leg-strap mounting geometry between the GC-2000 and GC-3000 generations. The caps look identical from the ground, but the strap spacing differs by three-quarters of an inch. We carry both mount kits on the truck, and we measure before quoting so you’re not paying for a second trip. For stainless multi-flue caps, the SS-series uses a bolt-on base ring that can outlast two cap replacements if the original installer set it in silicone rather than mortar. We source Gelco-compatible caps through Haven’s buying network alongside DuraFlex and HeatShield materials, which keeps our pricing honest without marking up OEM-only parts.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing
  • Rust stains on the brick below the cap. Gelco’s galvanized caps carry a 20-year warranty, but Atlanta’s pollen season traps moisture against the lid, and we’ve seen GC-series caps start weeping rust at year 12 in shaded lots near Peachtree Creek. The stain means the galvanized layer has breached and the steel core is oxidizing.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. The mesh screen on Gelco caps is spot-welded to the frame. When those welds fatigue, the screen drops slightly and creates a gap where wind-driven rain enters. In Buckhead, we see this most on north-facing chimneys that take the brunt of spring storms.
  • Mesh screen pulling away from the frame. Squirrels and raccoons test every cap in Atlanta’s tree canopy. Gelco’s .018-inch mesh holds up to probing, but if the spot welds have already corroded, animals can pry the screen loose enough to enter. The gap may be small enough to miss from the ground.
  • Cap sitting crooked or tilted. The leg straps on older GC-series caps are mild steel with a galvanized coating. Once the coating fails at the bend points, the straps weaken and the cap shifts in wind. A tilted cap channels water toward the flue instead of away from it.
  • Visible gaps between cap and flue tile. Gelco caps are designed to overhang the flue by one to two inches. If the cap has shifted or the flue tile has spalled at the top, that overhang disappears and embers can escape onto the roof. We document this with the camera on every inspection.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Standard single-flue Gelco cap (galvanized), installed $340-$460
Single-flue Gelco cap (stainless), installed $480-$620
Multi-flue Gelco-style cap, installed $560-$680
Flue tile repair or rebuild at cap mount $180-$340 additional

The range depends on three things: cap material (galvanized vs. stainless vs. copper), whether we can reuse the existing mount hardware, and whether the flue tile top needs mortar repair before the new cap seals properly. We deliver a written price before any work starts, per Haven Standard Clause 1, and that price includes the cap, all fasteners, silicone or mortar as needed, and a photo record of the completed mount. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation. We also stock DuraFlex and HeatShield materials if your inspection reveals liner or crown issues while we’re on the roof.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s one safe check you can do from the ground: binoculars to confirm the cap is level, the mesh is intact, and no rust streaks are running the brick. Everything else belongs on a ladder, and that’s where most DIY attempts go wrong. Atlanta’s clay-tile flues are brittle after twenty years of freeze-thaw, and the torque of tightening a new cap’s leg straps can crack the tile if you don’t distribute pressure evenly. A cracked flue tile at the top means water intrusion and potential liner replacement, not just a cap swap.

We carry Gelco-compatible caps, mount kits, and the right torque drivers on every truck. The camera inspection is included, so you’ll see the flue condition before we quote. Call (470) 435-7984 to book. Estimates are free, and we deliver them in writing.
