Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The pull chain hangs slack or the handle spins freely. On Gelco units, the linkage between the handle and the plate pivot is a threaded rod that corrodes where it passes through the frame channel. Atlanta’s humidity accelerates this, and once the threads strip, the handle no longer transfers motion to the plate. The plate itself may be fine, but the linkage failure makes the damper inoperable.
• You feel cold air dropping down the flue even when the damper is “closed.” The cast-iron Gelco plates warp slightly over repeated heating cycles, and the steel plates can bow from accumulated creosote weight. Either way, the plate no longer seats flush against the frame. DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s a hard stop. An owner can safely verify the model label, measure the frame opening, and confirm whether the handle turns freely without the plate moving. What you cannot safely do is remove the plate from a working fireplace without first confirming the flue is clear and the fire is fully out - carbon monoxide doesn’t announce itself.

The actual replacement requires working at the throat of the chimney, often in tight firebox conditions, with the plate and frame weighing 15-30 pounds depending on the Gelco series. The pivot pins are under spring tension on some models, and a slipped pin can send a cast-iron plate down the flue or onto the firebrick below.
